Biography of Alan Titus
Born on October 28, 1945, in New York City, Alan Titus is an American baritone and an internationally acclaimed artist. He studied at the Colorado School of Music under Aksel Schiøtz, a renowned Danish tenor and post-war baritone, and Hans Heinz at The Juilliard School.
Early Career
Alan Titus made his official debut in 1969, performing the role of Marcello in "La bohème" at an opera house in Washington, DC. In 1971, he gained recognition by singing the role of the Celebrant in Leonard Bernstein's musical theater piece, "MASS." That same year, he became the first performer to portray the character of Archie Kramer in Lee Hoiby's opera "Summer and Smoke," based on the play by Tennessee Williams. The premiere took place at St Paul Opera in Minnesota, conducted by Igor Buketoff. In 1971, Titus also made his debut at the New York City Opera, where he later became a leading baritone for many seasons.
Notable Performances
Alan Titus participated in nationally televised productions at the New York City Opera, including "Il barbiere di Siviglia" with Beverly Sills in 1976, "Il turco in Italia" in 1978, "La Cenerentola" with Susanne Marsee and Rockwell Blake in 1980, and finally, "Madama Butterfly" conducted by Christopher Keene in 1982. He had a single performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1976, singing the role of Harlekin in "Ariadne auf Naxos" alongside Montserrat Caballé.
In 1973, Titus made his European debut in Amsterdam as Pelléas in "Pelléas et Mélisande." Since then, he has performed in various prestigious opera houses and theaters, including Glyndebourne, Munich, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Vienna, Paris, Rome, Covent Garden in London, Berlin, and many more.
In the year 2000, he portrayed Wotan in "Der Ring des Nibelungen" at the Bayreuth Festival. Prior to this, he sang the lead role in "Der fliegende Holländer" in 1998 and 1999. In 1994, Alan Titus was honored with the title of Kammersänger in Munich.
