Albert Becker: German Composer and Conductor
Albert Becker was a renowned German composer and conductor. He received his musical education from Siegfried Dehn, studying under him from 1853 to 1856. In 1881, Becker began teaching at the Scharrwenka Conservatory, and later at the Berlin Academy of Arts. Some of his notable students included Jean Sibelius, Oscar Merikanto, and Karl Krebs. In 1890, he assumed the position of the Royal Court Choir director.
Achievements and Musical Style
As a composer, Becker achieved his first success in 1861 when his first symphony won a prize from the Vienna Society of Friends of Music. He became well-known for his church and choral music, including the Mass in B-flat minor composed in 1878. Becker also composed a piano quintet, several works for violin and orchestra, songs, and an unfinished opera titled "Lorelei".
Legacy and Family
Albert Becker's grandson, Gunter Rafael, followed in his footsteps and became a composer as well.
