Early Life and Career Beginnings

Albert Bunjaku, a Swiss footballer of Kosovar-Albanian descent, was born and raised in Pristina, Kosovo. At the age of 8, he moved to Switzerland with his parents. Despite his late start in organized football at 13, Bunjaku's passion for the sport was evident even before he traded basketball for football. His professional career commenced in the Swiss Challenge League with Schaffhausen, where he spent two seasons, making 39 appearances and scoring three goals.

Breakthrough in Germany

In 2006, Bunjaku signed with German club Paderborn, but his stint there proved short-lived. A fortuitous encounter between his wife and the wife of former Paderborn coach Pavel Dochev paved the way for his transfer to Rot-Weiss Erfurt. His arrival in Erfurt coincided with a surge in his performances, culminating in a memorable performance against Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal.

Rocking the Cup Against Bayern Munich

On August 10, 2008, Bunjaku became an overnight sensation. Introduced as a second-half substitute in a DFB-Pokal match against Bayern Munich, he stunned the German giants by scoring a brace within 20 minutes. Despite Rot-Weiss Erfurt's eventual 4-3 defeat, Bunjaku's performance caught the attention of the football world.

Nuremberg and International Debut

In 2009, Bunjaku moved to 1. FC Nürnberg in the Bundesliga. He made his league debut in August that year, scoring his first goal in October. Bunjaku's impressive form also earned him a call-up to the Swiss national team. He made his debut in a friendly against Norway in November 2009 and was subsequently included in Switzerland's squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
