Biography of Albert Franz Doppler
Albert Franz Doppler was a virtuoso flutist and composer of Austro-Hungarian origin, primarily known for his works for the flute. He wrote one opera in German called 'Judith' and several in Hungarian, totaling seven, which were highly successful in Budapest. Doppler's music for fifteen ballets was also very popular. In addition, he was an excellent conductor.
Early Life
Albert Franz Doppler was born on October 16, 1821, in Lviv, which was then part of Austria-Hungary. Lviv was the center of one of the provinces and was known as Lemberg. From the age of 7 to 10, he studied the flute with his father, Joseph Doppler, who was a renowned oboist. At the age of 13, Franz Doppler made his debut as a flutist before the public. He often performed duets with his brother Karl, who was four years younger, and the duo became a sensation in Europe. Karl also became a composer, primarily writing songs and musical accompaniments.
Professional Career
Doppler and his brother Karl toured extensively, and in 1838, they joined the orchestra of the German Theater in Budapest. Three years later, in 1841, the brothers moved together to the Hungarian National Theater, where they successfully premiered five of Franz's operas. They continued to tour regularly throughout Europe and in 1853, they helped assemble the new Hungarian Philharmonic Orchestra.
At the age of 18, Franz Doppler became the principal flutist at the Budapest Opera House. He later added the role of conductor to his responsibilities and eventually became the chief conductor of the Vienna Court Opera. From 1864 to 1867, Doppler served as a professor at the Vienna Conservatoire, teaching flute.
Legacy
Doppler primarily composed music for the flute, and even in his operas, one can recognize the style that made his works for wind instruments famous. His repertoire includes concertos, pieces, and numerous flute duets that he composed for his duet performances with his brother. Doppler's music carries the influences of Russian classical music and Hungarian folk melodies. His orchestral arrangements of Franz Liszt's six Hungarian Rhapsodies are well-known, as Doppler was familiar with Liszt and collaborated with him on these arrangements. Doppler also made notable flute transcriptions of some of Liszt's rhapsodies.
Albert Franz Doppler passed away on July 27, 1883, at the age of 61 in Baden, near Vienna, Austria.
