Early Life and Career
Alberta Vaughn was born on June 27, 1904, in Ashland, Kentucky. She entered the film industry in 1921 with the short comedy "Stop Kidding." Between 1921 and 1931, she appeared in 131 films.
WAMPAS Baby Star
In 1924, Vaughn was selected as one of the "WAMPAS Baby Stars" along with Clara Bow and Dorothy Mackaill. This recognition brought her considerable publicity and helped launch her career. Her younger sister, Ada Mae Vaughn, also became an actress and was a WAMPAS Baby Star in 1927.
Transition to Sound and Character Roles
Vaughn successfully made the transition from silent films to sound pictures. Her small stature and feisty personality made her well-suited for character and comedic roles. She often co-starred with comedian Al Cook and appeared with rising star John Wayne in the 1934 western "Randy Rides Alone."
Stage and Final Film Appearances
In 1932, Vaughn joined the cast of the stage play "Intermission." In 1935, she made her final film appearance in the romantic comedy "The Live Wire."
Personal Life
Vaughn was engaged to actor Grant Withers in 1926, but the engagement was broken off. She later became engaged to attorney Charles Feldman, but that relationship also ended. In 1934, she married Joseph Egli, an assistant director at Paramount Pictures. In 1948, she married John R. Thompson, a roofing contractor. Vaughn had no children.
Legal Troubles and Later Years
Vaughn faced some legal troubles in later life. In 1949, she spent 12.5 days in jail for drunk and disorderly conduct. She died on April 26, 1992, at the age of 87.
