Early Life and Education

Carl Friedrich Agthe was born in Magdeburg, Germany, on August 25, 1785, to Karl Christian Agthe, a composer and organist. He attended the gymnasium in Magdeburg and later studied music in Erfurt under Michael Gotthard Fischer.

Teaching Career

In 1810, Agthe began his teaching career in Leipzig. In 1812, he joined the Gewandhaus Orchestra as a violinist. He subsequently taught in Dresden, Posen (where he had Theodore and Adolf Kullak as students), and Breslau, where he employed Logier's method, emphasizing group lessons over individual instruction and the concurrent study of piano technique and harmony.

Berlin Music School

In 1823, Agthe established his own music school in Berlin. He was also a music teacher to the princesses of the Prussian court. From 1826 to 1830, he taught music in Poznań (formerly Breslau).

Later Years

After 1845, Agthe's deteriorating eyesight forced him to retire from teaching. He authored overtures, church music, piano pieces, and songs. Carl Friedrich Agthe passed away on March 17, 1872, in Berlin at the age of 86.
