Baby Willow's Unusual Birth
Willow Flatter-Paziuk, a month-old infant, has astonished doctors by being born with her legs outstretched like a "rotisserie chicken" due to an unusual fetal position in the womb. Despite her peculiar ability, scans show no medical issues.
The 'Little Gymnast'
Willow's flexibility has earned her the nickname "little gymnast" from the amazed medical team. Her mother, 20-year-old Lily Paziuk, refers to her as a "little chick" because her unusual posture resembles a cooked bird.
Fetal Entrapment
Doctors believe Willow likely became "trapped" in the womb, causing her legs to tuck behind her shoulders. This resulted in her being able to stretch her legs to shoulder level even after birth. Lily bent her knees the day after she was born, but prefers sleeping with her legs apart.
A Surprise to the Mother
Lily, a former barista from Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, was shocked by Willow's unusual position. "I'd never heard of anything like it before," she said. "She still flings her legs out even when she's asleep, so we call her our little chick. She just looks like a little rotisserie chicken."
Fetal Position Confusion
During her pregnancy, Lily had ultrasound scans that initially suggested her daughter was covering her face with her hands. However, these turned out to be her legs. "I've got a picture from 15 weeks pregnant and her legs are normal," Lily explained.
Cesarean Birth
Due to Willow's breech presentation, Lily underwent a Caesarean section. As a result, she didn't see Willow immediately after birth. Lily recalls the strange reaction of the staff at Pinderfields Hospital.
Leg Extension
When the nurses brought Willow back to the ward, Lily was surprised to discover her daughter's unusual leg position. "I went to change her nappy for the first time and her legs – it just shot out."
Flexibility and Motherly Worries
Despite her initial concerns, Lily has embraced her daughter's flexibility. "We'll have a laugh about it when she's older. I don't let it go unnoticed. I think she's going to be very flexible."
Medical Reassurance
Scans of Willow's hips have ruled out any abnormalities. Her legs have returned to a more normal position and are almost straight.
Willow's Journey
"Willow still sleeps in the same way, although with her legs out to the side," Lily said. "She must be comfortable like that. As long as she's happy, that's all that matters."
