Albrecht Brandi: A Renowned Kriegsmarine U-Boat Commander
Early Life and Naval CareerAlbrecht Brandi was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1914. He joined the German Navy in 1933, enrolling in the Naval College in Flensburg-Mürwik. After training on minesweepers, Brandi was assigned to the mine warfare vessel M-1 during the outbreak of World War II.
Baptism by Fire
In April 1941, Brandi finally secured a position within the U-boat force. By the end of 1941, he had gained operational experience aboard U-552 under the command of the legendary Erich Topp.
Command of U-617
In April 1942, Brandi took command of U-617 in Kiel. During his patrol from Kiel to Saint-Nazaire, he sank four enemy ships. Subsequently, in November 1942, Brandi audaciously penetrated the heavily defended Strait of Gibraltar. Despite being attacked by a British aircraft and multiple ships, Brandi skillfully maneuvered U-617 to safety.
Mediterranean Operations
From November 1942 to September 1943, Brandi's U-boat operated from bases in Toulon and La Spezia. During one patrol, Brandi encountered a British submarine. After an intense three-hour duel, Brandi submerged and broke away, evading capture.
Recognition and Decorations
On January 21, 1943, Brandi was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his exceptional bravery. He subsequently received the Oak Leaves (April 11, 1943), the Swords (May 19, 1944), and the Diamonds (November 24, 1944) to his Knight's Cross.
Legacy
During his service, Brandi was credited with sinking 8 ships totaling 25,879 tons, 1 auxiliary vessel, and 3 destroyers. He was one of only 27 individuals to receive the coveted Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. Brandi's unwavering resolve and tactical brilliance made him one of the most decorated and respected U-boat commanders of the Kriegsmarine.
