Early Life and InfluencesAlcides Lanza, a Canadian composer, conductor, pianist, and music educator, was born on June 2, 1929, in Rosario, Argentina. His formal musical training began in Buenos Aires, where he studied composition under Julián Bautista and Alberto Ginastera, piano with Ruwin Erlich, and conducting with Roberto Kinsky.
International Education and Recognition
In the 1960s, Lanza received various scholarships and grants, allowing him to pursue advanced studies in composition and electronic music. He learned from renowned teachers such as Olivier Messiaen, Aaron Copland, and Yvonne Loriod.
Contributions to the Argentine and Canadian Music Scenes
From 1959 to 1965, Lanza served as pianist and vocal coach at Buenos Aires' Teatro Colón. He also led the organization "Agrupacion Música Viva." After moving to Canada in 1971, he joined the faculty of McGill University's Music Department and established the university's electronic music program in 1974.
Composing, Performing, and Multimedia Experiments
As a composer, Lanza blended traditional and unconventional instruments, incorporating electronic sounds. His compositions are published by Boosey & Hawkes and Shelan Editions. He is known for his innovative performances that included lighting effects. Lanza founded the "Composers/Performers Group," known for its multimedia shows.
Later Career and Collaborations
In 1972, Lanza became director of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec but soon stepped down. He wrote "Plectros IV" for SMCQ, premiered in 1975. Lanza performed in Germany and Scandinavia in the early 1970s. In 1986, he traveled with his wife, actress and singer Meg Sheppard, to present Canadian music in Argentina and Brazil.
