Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Alec John Such: Early Years

Alec John Such was born of Hungarian descent in the United States. At the tender age of seven, his parents encouraged him to take up violin lessons, and his musical talents eventually led him to join the New Jersey State Orchestra as a violinist. However, Such's passion lay elsewhere.

Joining the Bon Jovi Revolution

Bon Jovi's Founding Bassist

Drawn to the allure of rock music, Such found himself drawn to a local band seeking a bassist. Despite his lack of experience on the instrument, he seized the opportunity and quickly mastered the bass guitar. Joining forces with his future bandmate Richie Sambora, Such played in the bands Message and Phantom's Opera alongside Tico Torres and Dave Fahz.

In 1983, Such joined the fledgling band that would become Bon Jovi. He contributed his bass-playing skills to the band's first five albums, occasionally taking on vocal duties, including lead vocals for the song "Blood on Blood."

Departure from Bon Jovi

Unveiling the Reasons

Such departed Bon Jovi in 1994, after the release of the compilation album "Cross Road." While he never publicly disclosed his reasons for leaving, bandmates Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora hinted at performance issues.

Some speculate that Such's departure may have been influenced by a motorcycle accident he suffered during the recording of "Keep the Faith." The injury affected his playing ability and caused him significant pain during performances.

The Post-Bon Jovi Era

New Ventures and a Brief Return

After leaving Bon Jovi, Such played with various local bands in New Jersey and ventured into entrepreneurship, opening a motorcycle shop in New York City. He also managed the Chicago rock band 7th Heaven in 1998.

In 2001, Such made a brief appearance with Bon Jovi during the One Wild Night Tour at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, performing the song "Wanted Dead or Alive."

Hall of Fame Recognition

A Reunion with History

On April 14, 2018, Such and Sambora reunited with Bon Jovi at the band's induction ceremony into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Such delivered the first acceptance speech and joined the band onstage for a performance of "Livin' on a Prayer."

A Legacy Endures

Unofficial but Integral

Despite his unofficial status within the band, Such's contributions to Bon Jovi remain undeniable. He played on the band's most iconic albums and played a pivotal role in their early success. Although he may no longer be an official member, his legacy as the original bassist of Bon Jovi lives on.
