Biography of Mick Jones

Mick Jones, born Michael Geoffrey Jones in 1955 in Brixton, South London, England, is an English rock guitarist, singer, and former member of the punk band 'The Clash'.

Mick Jones

Early Life and Music Career

Jones spent most of his childhood with his maternal grandmother in South London and attended the Strand School. At a young age, he realized his passion for music, particularly playing the guitar. In the early 1970s, Jones gained recognition as the guitarist for the glam rock band 'The Delinquents'. He later became a member and co-founder of the punk collective 'London SS'. In the summer of 1976, 'London SS' merged with 'The 101'ers', resulting in the formation of 'The Clash', Jones's most successful and well-known project.

The Clash and Success

Jones met Paul Simonon at an art college, where Simonon was already known as a troublemaker. The two formed a bond, and Jones introduced Simonon to playing bass guitar. 'The Clash' quickly established themselves in the fashionable British punk rock scene, blending hard glam and classic rock 'n' roll with politically charged lyrics. The band's self-titled debut album, released in 1977, achieved considerable success. Unlike many British musical collectives of the time, 'The Clash' enjoyed longevity, lasting until the mid-1980s.

Mick Jones

Post-'The Clash' Career

Jones, along with the other members of 'The Clash', made a pact not to perform with 'Sex Pistols' due to Jones's Jewish heritage and his disdain for the fascist imagery associated with Sid Vicious. However, tensions arose within the band, and after the release of the album 'Cut the Crap' in 1985, Jones left 'The Clash'. He went on to form his own band, 'Big Audio Dynamite', after a brief stint with 'General Public'. 'Big Audio Dynamite' released several notable albums, including 'No. 10, Upping St.' in 1986 and 'Tighten Up Vol. 88' in 1988.

The group embarked on a tour in the UK and the US and released albums such as 'Sample This, Peace' and 'Dope Factory Boogie' in 2003, followed by 'The Grand Delusion!' and 'The Homecoming' in the following year. Jones continues to be involved with 'Carbon/Silicon' to this day.

Recent Activity and Legacy

In 2003, Jones was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of 'The Clash'. As a producer, Jones has collaborated with Richard Archer, Ellen Foley, 'The Libertines', and many other musicians and bands. More recently, he has been involved with 'Gorillaz' and performed with them in 2010.
