Alexander Rzhavsky: Ukrainian Politician and Economist
Early Life and CareerAlexander Rzhavsky was born on January 30, 1959, in the village of Belenkoye, Ukraine. In 1976, he moved to Odessa and joined a fishing trawler as a sailor. After serving in the army, he worked in various low-skilled jobs. In 1985, he enrolled in the Poltava Cooperative Institute, graduating with a degree in cooperative economics in 1991.
Business and Political Beginnings
In 1989, Rzhavsky founded the first private enterprise in Ukraine, named "Koral." While his business thrived, Rzhavsky also pursued an active role in politics. In 1997, he established and led a public organization called "Edina Semya" (United Family).
Parliamentary Ambitions
In 1998, Rzhavsky was elected to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) as a member of Edina Semya from a single-mandate constituency. He served as the party's chairman until 2002.
Presidential Bids and Electoral Challenges
Rzhavsky participated in two presidential elections. In 1999, he finished ninth, and in 2004, he placed 18th. In the 2002 parliamentary elections, he attempted to lead the "For Yushchenko!" electoral bloc, but the bloc was removed from registration due to a legal challenge. He also unsuccessfully ran as an independent candidate in a by-election later that year.
Support for the Orange Revolution
Rzhavsky supported the Orange Revolution and its leader, Viktor Yushchenko. However, he failed to win a seat in the 2006 parliamentary elections as part of the "Solntse" (Sun) bloc.
Post-Parliamentary Life
Rzhavsky currently heads the "Edinstvo" (Unity) Charitable Foundation and serves as Vice President of the Ukrainian Fencing Federation.
