Juan Pablo Duarte: A Fighter for Dominican Republic's Independence

Juan Pablo Duarte was a political and state leader who fought for the independence of the Dominican Republic. In 1838, he, along with F. Sanchez del Rosario and R.M. Mella, founded the secret patriotic society known as "La Trinitaria" with the goal of liberating the country from Haitian domination.

Struggle for Independence and Presidency

After successfully achieving independence in 1844, Duarte was declared president. However, General P. Santana seized power, leading to Duarte's forced exile from his homeland. Despite being banished, Duarte continued to oppose the occupation of the Dominican Republic by Spanish troops from 1861 to 1865.

Return and Fight Against Colonial Rule

In 1864, Duarte returned to his homeland to participate in the struggle against Spanish colonial rule. Shortly after, he was sent on a diplomatic mission to Venezuela, where he passed away. In 1884, Duarte's remains were brought back to Santo Domingo, where he was laid to rest.
