Early Life and Education
Alexander Iovianovich Voloshin was born on January 1, 1922, in Yekaterinoslav (now Dnipropetrovsk), Ukraine, to a railroad worker. After completing eight grades of school and attending an aeroclub, Voloshin joined the Red Army in April 1940. He graduated from a military aviation school in 1941.
Wartime Service
Voloshin entered active service in 1941 and quickly distinguished himself as a skilled fighter pilot. As deputy commander of an aviation squadron in the 107th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, he participated in numerous aerial battles. On August 22, 1944, Voloshin's plane was set ablaze in an encounter west of Sandomierz, Poland. Despite the intense flames, he courageously rammed his damaged aircraft into an enemy fighter, destroying it.
Heroism and Awards
For his extraordinary bravery, Voloshin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on June 27, 1945. In the course of the war, he flew 293 combat missions and engaged in 65 aerial battles, claiming 16 enemy aircraft. Voloshin also received the Order of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, and three Orders of the Red Star.
Postwar Career
After the war, Voloshin continued his military service. He graduated from Higher Officer Flight and Tactical Courses in 1949 and from Advanced Officer Courses at the Air Force Academy in 1959. He retired with the rank of Colonel in 1972 and settled in Baranovichi, Brest Region, Belarus.
Legacy and Final Honors
Alexander Voloshin passed away on September 22, 1989. His memory is honored as a true hero of the Soviet Union and a symbol of bravery and resilience.
