After centuries of Muslim rule in the Deccan, Shivaji, who rebelled against the Muslim rulers and by 1674 established a powerful Maratha state in the region of Maharashtra and its neighboring lands, is a national hero of India. His actions revealed the weakness of the Mughal Empire and paved the way for its downfall.
Biography of Chhatrapati Shivaji
Chhatrapati Shivaji was born on February 16, 1630, in the Indian region of Pune. He was the son of an influential feudal lord and military commander. From 1646 to 1655, using military forces, cunning, and bribery, he gained control over Northwest Maharashtra and Northern Konkan. From 1658 to 1661, he waged successful wars against Bijapur. In the years 1660-1665, he fought against the Mughal Empire but eventually lost the war. In 1665, the Treaty of Purandar was signed, according to which a significant portion of Shivaji's territories was given to the Mughals, and he became their vassal.
In 1670, Shivaji once again declared war on the Mughals, managed to reclaim all his lands, and for the second time captured the port of Surat (which was first captured by him in 1664). In 1674, he was crowned and became the supreme ruler of Maharashtra in the city of Raigad. From 1675 to 1678, he embarked on military campaigns in Kannara, Carnatic, and Mysore. In his last years, he ruled over the entire Maharashtra, Konkan, Kannara, parts of Carnatic, and Mysore.
On April 3, 1680, Shivaji passed away in the capital of his state, the city of Raigad. The largest airport in India and a railway station in Mumbai are named after him.
