Early Life and CareerBorn into a peasant family in rural Russia, Alexey Alexandrovich Denisov embarked on a distinguished military career in 1929 by joining the Red Army. In 1932, he completed the Leningrad Infantry School, followed by the Krasnoznamennaya Military Aviation School in Boriso glebsk in 1934. Subsequently, he served in the 3rd Fighter Squadron of the Baltic Fleet Air Force.
Spanish Civil War
Denisov's exceptional valor and skill as a pilot were first showcased during the Spanish Civil War, where he fought for the Republican forces from 1937 to 1938. He flew 45 combat missions, engaged in 10 aerial battles, and personally shot down seven enemy aircraft. For his bravery, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
During one particularly intense engagement over Teruel, Denisov's squadron encountered a formidable force of enemy bombers and fighter escorts. Despite being outnumbered, they engaged the enemy in a fierce 55-minute battle. Denisov's I-16 squadron targeted the Bf.109 Messerschmitts, while the I-15s attacked the Fiat G.50s. Ultimately, the Republicans claimed victory, with six Messerschmitts and four Fiats reportedly shot down.
Winter War
Denisov's exploits continued during the Soviet-Finnish War in 1939-1940. As commander of the 12th Separate Fighter Squadron, his unit was credited with downing nine enemy aircraft. In one memorable incident, despite flying in blinding snow and wind, Denisov led an attack on a Finnish convoy, destroying numerous vehicles and supplies.
On another mission, Denisov's squadron successfully raided an enemy airfield, setting multiple aircraft ablaze. His heroism earned him the Order of Lenin and the title Hero of the Soviet Union, making him a national icon in the war against the Finns.
World War II
From the outbreak of World War II in 1941, Denisov continued to command a frontline fighter squadron, this time in the Baltic Fleet. Despite his combat experience, he faced initial resistance from his commander, who resented losing his experienced pilots.
Undeterred, Denisov proved his worth by leading numerous successful air patrols and combat missions over the Baltic Sea. His exploits inspired his fellow pilots and earned him the respect of his superiors.
Later Career
In 1942, Denisov was transferred to the Pacific Fleet, where he commanded a fighter regiment. He also participated in the Soviet-Japanese War in 1945. After retiring from the military in 1946 as a Guards Major, Denisov dedicated himself to public service, working with veterans' organizations and sharing his knowledge and experience with younger generations.

His bravery, skill, and unwavering dedication to his country earned him numerous awards and the admiration of his contemporaries and countrymen.
