William Light, a soldier, artist, trader, explorer, and city planner, is renowned as the founder and planner of the beautiful city of Adelaide in Australia. He was appointed as the Surveyor-General of South Australia in 1836, with the primary task of constructing the capital city of the new colony.
The Visionary Planner
Light's vision for the city led him to choose a small island in the eastern part of St Vincent Gulf, a location that had previously captivated the explorer K. Barker. Despite facing opposition, Light promised to build a safe harbor, ensure the supply of fresh water, and distribute large plots of land on the Adelaide Plains to settlers. In March 1837, he completed the city's planning, including the surrounding parks. It was then that Colonel Light named the city "Adelaide."
