Alexei Mazurenko: A Biography

Alexei E. Mazurenko was a bomber pilot, a Major General of Aviation, and a Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born into a peasant family on October 23, 1917. Mazurenko was of Ukrainian nationality and joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1942.

Before being conscripted into the Soviet Army, Mazurenko worked as an electrician. He trained at a glider school and later at an aero club. In 1938, he was called for military service and sent to the Naval Aviation School, from which he graduated in 1940. During the Great Patriotic War, Mazurenko rose from being a pilot to becoming a squadron commander. He flew thousands of kilometers in his Il-2 aircraft over the sea, German fortifications, and participated in battles near Leningrad and the Baltic states. Throughout the war, he successfully completed around 300 combat sorties, sinking numerous enemy ships and destroying a significant amount of enemy equipment on land.

After the war, Major General of Aviation A.E. Mazurenko completed advanced officer tactical courses and the aviation faculty of the Naval Academy. He commanded units, worked at higher military educational institutions, and since 1972, he has been in reserve, living and working in Leningrad. Mazurenko's leadership and bravery in combat earned him many awards, including the Order of Lenin, Order of the Red Banner, and Order of the Patriotic War.

Mazurenko's courage and skill as a pilot were evident throughout his military career. He was known for his daring and precise bombing attacks on enemy targets, particularly during night missions. His dedication to the Soviet Union and his desire to protect the city of Leningrad from enemy forces led him to undertake dangerous solo flights to destroy enemy ships and disrupt their supply lines.
