Rosa Shanina: A Legendary Soviet Sniper

Early Life and Education

Born in 1924 in the northern Russian village of Edelarovo, Rosa Shanina's life took an unexpected turn with the outbreak of World War II. After leaving her teaching studies, she completed basic military training and enrolled in the Central Women's Sniper School in Podolsk.

Joining the Front

In April 1944, Shanina joined the 184th Rifle Division, which formed a separate female sniper platoon. With exceptional marksmanship skills, she quickly became one of the leading snipers in the division.

Combat Record

Throughout her military service, Shanina recorded an impressive tally of 54 confirmed kills against enemy forces, including 12 in the Battle of Vilnius. She displayed remarkable courage and determination on the front lines, earning the respect of her comrades.

Military Honors

Shanina's unwavering bravery and lethal efficiency earned her numerous military honors. She was one of the first female snipers to receive the Order of Glory, third and second degrees, as well as the prestigious "For Courage" Medal.

Legacy

Tragically, Shanina was killed in battle in 1945. Her name has become synonymous with the heroism of female soldiers. Streets in Arkhangelsk and other towns bear her name, and her grave is located in the Kaliningrad region of Russia.

Family and Loss

Shanina came from a family of four brothers. During the war, she lost three: Mikhail to the siege of Leningrad, Fyodor in the battle for Crimea, and Sergei, who never returned from the front. Only Marat survived the conflict.
