Early Life and Education

Alexey Mordashov was born in Cherepovets, Russia. In 1988, he graduated with honors from the Leningrad Institute of Economics and Engineering (Tolly Institute). It was during his time at Tolly Institute that he first met Anatoly Chubais, who later became a prominent figure in Russian politics.

Career at Severstal

Mordashov began his career at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant in 1988, holding various positions within the organization. In 1992, he became the Director of Economics and Finance for the plant, which was later transformed into Severstal OJSC.

As the youngest director in the Soviet Union, Mordashov played a pivotal role in the privatization of Severstal. He established a subsidiary company, Severstal-Invest, and gradually acquired control of Severstal's shares. By 1996, Mordashov had become the majority shareholder and CEO of Severstal.

Under his leadership, Severstal grew into a global steel giant. Mordashov implemented innovative management practices, expanded the company's operations, and acquired numerous other steel and mining companies.
