Early Life and Education
Aleka Hammond was born on September 23, 1965, in Narsaq, Greenland. She grew up in Uummannaq, where her father tragically died in a hunting accident when she was seven years old.
Political Career
Hammond embarked on her political journey when she was first elected to the Greenlandic Parliament in 2005. She served as Greenland's Minister of Family and Justice before becoming the Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs in 2007. However, she resigned from the latter position in 2008 due to her concerns about the government's budget deficit.
In 2009, Hammond replaced Hans Enoksen as the leader of the Siumut party. Under her leadership, the party won the 2013 elections, propelling Hammond to become Greenland's first female Prime Minister.
Premiership and Resignation
As Prime Minister, Hammond faced numerous challenges, including controversies surrounding government spending. In 2014, she resigned due to a scandal involving her expenses, paving the way for Kim Kielsen to succeed her as Prime Minister and party leader.
Continuing Political Involvement
Despite her resignation as Prime Minister, Hammond remained an active politician. In 2015, she was elected as a member of the Danish Folketing, the national parliament of Denmark.
Personal Life
Hammond is married to Georg Nygaard, with whom she has an adopted son.
