Nunzia De Girolamo: Italian Politician and Former Minister
Birth and Early LifeNunzia De Girolamo was born on October 10, 1975, in Benevento, Italy. Her father was a long-time director of the Benevento Agricultural Consortium. She attended Pietro Giannone Classical High School in Benevento and later earned a law degree from Sapienza University of Rome.
Legal Career
De Girolamo practiced law in the areas of civil, employment, commercial, and banking law. She collaborated with the University of Sannio and the University of Molise in her field.
Political Career
De Girolamo entered politics in 2007 as a coordinator for the Forward Italy party in her hometown. She became acquainted with Silvio Berlusconi after presenting him with a cloth doll bearing the inscription "Libertà" (Freedom) at a rally in Naples.
Parliamentary Service
From 2008 to 2013, De Girolamo served as a member of the People of Freedom party's parliamentary faction in the Chamber of Deputies. She was elected to the Chamber again in 2013 on the same party's list but later joined the New Center-Right (NCD).
Minister of Agricultural, Food, and Forestry Policies
On April 28, 2013, De Girolamo became Minister of Agricultural, Food, and Forestry Policies in Enrico Letta's government. She resigned on January 26, 2014, citing allegations of wrongdoing in the local health authority in Benevento and the government's lack of support.
Leader of the Parliamentary Group
In March 2014, De Girolamo was elected Chairwoman of the NCD parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies. In April 2015, she was replaced by Maurizio Lupi following the party's withdrawal from Renzi's government.
Return to Forward Italy and Controversies
In September 2015, De Girolamo returned to the Forward Italy faction after talks with Silvio Berlusconi. In March 2016, the Benevento prosecutor's office reopened a criminal investigation into her involvement in the local healthcare center scandal.
Electoral Defeat and Post-Political Career
De Girolamo was excluded from the Forward Italy electoral list for the 2018 elections and failed to regain a seat in the Chamber of Deputies. After leaving politics, she began writing a column for the newspaper "Il Tempo."
Personal Life
On December 23, 2011, De Girolamo married Francesco Boccia, a member of the Democratic Party. They had a daughter named Gea in June 2012.
