Childhood and Early Career

Alexei Mikhailchenko was born on March 30, 1963, in Kiev, Ukraine. From a young age, he displayed exceptional footballing skills and joined the youth academy of Dynamo Kyiv. His talent quickly became evident, and he made his debut for the first team at the age of 17.

International Success

During the late 1980s, Mikhailchenko played a pivotal role in the Soviet Union national team's success. He was a key member of the team that won the gold medal at the 1988 UEFA European Championship and reached the final of the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Move to Sampdoria

After the 1990 FIFA World Cup, where he missed out due to injury, Mikhailchenko made a landmark move to Italy's Sampdoria. The transfer fee of $3.5 million made him the first Soviet player to join a major European club. However, his time in Genoa was marked by challenges in adapting to the different footballing culture and language.

Successful Years in Glasgow

In 1992, Mikhailchenko joined Rangers in Scotland. Despite the club having recently won the Italian league, he felt that the move was a step forward for his career. He spent the next six seasons with the Glasgow giants, becoming a key player in its success. Rangers won the Scottish Premier League in each of Mikhailchenko's seasons at the club, along with several other domestic cups.

Return to Ukraine

After leaving Rangers in 1996, Mikhailchenko returned to Ukraine and played for CSKA Kyiv and Dinamo Kiev before retiring from professional football in 2000.

Coaching Career

Following his retirement, Mikhailchenko pursued a coaching career. He managed several clubs in Ukraine, including Dynamo Kyiv, and the Ukrainian national team from 2008 to 2010.
