Amo Bek-Nazaryan, a renowned Soviet Armenian film director, screenwriter, and actor, left an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
Early Life and Wrestling Career
Born in 1892, Bek-Nazaryan began his career as a professional wrestler, performing under the stage name "AMO Exotic." He achieved international fame, participating in tournaments across the globe.
Transition to Film
In 1914, Bek-Nazaryan made his cinematic debut with the film studio "Libken" in Yaroslavl. He later joined "Khankhonkov and Ko" and "Biofilm" studios. During World War I, he emerged as a star of silent Russian cinema, appearing in over 70 films.
Artistic Pursuits
After graduating from the Moscow Commercial Institute, Bek-Nazaryan became involved in various aspects of the arts. He served as an actor with the Moscow Music Section of the City Council and the Tbilisi Drama Theater.
Pioneer of Armenian Cinema
In 1921, Bek-Nazaryan played a pivotal role in establishing the film section of the Georgian People's Commissariat of Education. He went on to create the first Armenian feature film, "Namus" (1925).
Later Career and Legacy
In 1935, Bek-Nazaryan was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Armenian SSR. He continued directing and achieved recognition for films such as "Zangezur" (1938), "David-Bek" (1944), and "Pepo" (1935).
Bek-Nazaryan's legacy lives on through the Armenian film studio "Armenfilm," which was named after him in 1966. A postage stamp was issued in his honor in 2000, and the "Cinema Autumn-2012" festival was dedicated to his 120th anniversary.
