Early Life and Education

Alexander Bogorodsky was born in Horlivka, Ukraine, in 1931. He graduated from the pedagogical institute in Rostov-on-Don in 1931.

Academic Career

From 1933 to 1936, Bogorodsky studied under G.A. Tikhov at the astrophysics laboratory of the Lesgaft Institute of Natural Science in Leningrad. He was a senior research fellow at the same institute from 1936 to 1938 and again from 1941 to 1944. He was also a doctoral student at the Pulkovo Observatory from 1938 to 1944.

Work in Kiev

In 1944, Bogorodsky joined the Kyiv University observatory, serving as its director from 1953 to 1972. He began teaching at Kyiv University in 1945, becoming a professor in 1963 and a professor-consultant in 1978.

Research Contributions

General Theory of Relativity

Bogorodsky made significant contributions to the general theory of relativity. He examined the astronomical implications of the theory in his books "Einstein Field Equations" (1962) and "Universal Gravitation" (1971). He also investigated the propagation of light in gravitational fields, solved the relativistic Kepler problem, and studied the motion of particles in the field of rotating central bodies.

Astrophysics

Bogorodsky conducted research in astrophysics, particularly on the physics of the Sun and the theory of spectral line profiles in stars with moving atmospheres.

History of Astronomy

He also published on the history of astronomy, focusing on the development of the science in Kiev.
