Early Life and Education
Aleksandr Chizhovwas born in 1874 in Ufa, Russia, to a wealthy merchant family. His father, Fyodor Yegorovich, was a successful merchant, and his mother, Irada Alexandrovna, came from a noble family. Chizhov received a well-rounded education, including classical studies and music.
Business Ventures and Philanthropy
Upon the death of his father, Chizhov inherited a significant fortune and began managing his family's business interests. He owned numerous enterprises, including sawmills, flour mills, and a starch factory, and was involved in the timber trade. Despite his wealth, Chizhov remained active in philanthropy, supporting the construction and repair of churches in his community.
Involvement in Politics and Exile
Chizhov's political sympathies leaned towards the revolutionary movement. He had connections with intellectuals and political exiles in Ufa, and his estate became a safe haven for fugitive political prisoners. His involvement in these activities led to a death sentence from the Black Hundreds, a reactionary movement, in 1905. However, the peasants on his estate rallied to his defense and protected him from harm.
Artistic and Cultural Pursuits
Chizhov was a passionate lover of literature and music. He played the violin and sang in domestic concerts, and he was an avid theater-goer. He also enjoyed gambling, particularly roulette.
Later Years and Legacy
After spending four years in Siberia during the Russian Civil War, Chizhov settled in Samara with his family. He worked as a bank inspector and in various other positions in Moscow. In 1937, he was arrested by the NKVD and executed. Chizhov was later rehabilitated and posthumously honored for his contributions to Russian society.
