Early Life and Career
Sergiu Curtianu, a Moldovan footballer and coach, was born in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova. He began his career in 1991 with Zimbru Chisinau, where he played until 1996.
International and Club Career
In 1997, Curtianu was loaned to Polish club Widzew Lodz. The following year, he was loaned to Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg. In January 1999, he was loaned to German club Hamburger SV until June 30, 1999, with a conditional contract extension for three years. However, after the end of his loan spell, he returned to Zenit and signed a three-year contract.
During his time with Zenit, Curtianu won the 1998/99 Russian Cup. In 1998, he was included in the list of 33 best footballers in the Russian championship (No. 3). He also represented Torpedo-ZIL Moscow during his time in Russia.
Coaching Career
From late 2003 to 2007, Curtianu worked in various roles at Zimbru Chisinau, including assistant manager, sporting director, and acting manager. In 2009, he served as assistant manager at Smena-Zenit in Russia.
From late 2011 to 2014, Curtianu coached the Moldova U21 team. In the qualifying round for the 2015 European Under-21 Championship, his team earned 16 points in ten matches and finished third, behind Finland and England.
Manager of Moldova National Team
On September 24, 2014, Curtianu was appointed manager of the Moldova national team. However, on September 21, 2015, he resigned after the team finished last (6th) in their qualifying group for the 2016 European Championship.
