Birth and Family

Early Life and Education

Alexander Duchnovich, a Carpatho-Rusyn Greek Catholic priest, poet, and writer, was born on April 24, 1803, in the village of Topola, near Snina. His parents were Vasyl Dmytrovych Duchnovich, a Uniate priest, and Mariya Ivanovna Herber. According to family legend, their lineage had Russian origins. His grandfather told him that an ancestor, a Cherkassky from Moscow, had led the Streletsky Uprising and fled with companions to Hungary after its suppression. The ancestor settled in Topola, adopted the name Duchnovich, and became a church singer.

Early Education

Duchnovich began his education at the age of six with his uncle, Dmytro Herber, who taught him reading, psaltery, and horology. He showed great enthusiasm for learning. At the age of nine, he continued his studies at the Uzhhorod school in Hungarian, where he initially faced mockery due to his limited command of the language. However, he quickly mastered Hungarian, excelling in his studies.

Secondary and Theological Studies

In 1823, Duchnovich graduated from Uzhhorod and spent two years at a grammar school in Košice. He then entered the Uzhhorod seminary in 1825, where he studied theology until 1827. After completing his seminary studies, he was ordained as a priest.

Early Career and Literary Pursuits

Ecclesiastical Ministry

In 1827, Duchnovich was appointed to the Presov Consistory, where he served as a secretary under Bishop Hryhoriy Tarkovych. However, due to conflicts with the difficult-natured Tarkovych, he left Presov in 1830 and moved to Uzhhorod.

Literary Inspiration and Parish Life

In Uzhhorod, Duchnovich became a tutor in the household of a Hungarian magnate. The experience inspired him to write a play about a Slovak nobleman. In 1833, he was appointed as the parish priest of Komlošpapak, and in 1834, he transferred to Beloveža near Bardejov.

Notary and Literary Success

In 1838, Duchnovich was appointed as notary of the Uzhhorod Consistory. This position gave him access to extensive libraries, which stimulated his literary pursuits. He delved into history, theology, drama, law, and education, composing poems and writing historical works.

Priesthood in Presov

In 1843, Duchnovich was appointed canon of the Presov Cathedral, where he served until his death. In 1848, he was named archdeacon of Presov.

Later Years and Legacy

Illness and Death

In his later years, Duchnovich developed dropsy. After seven months of bedridden illness, he passed away on March 18 (30), 1865, at the age of 61. He received the last rites from Bishop Josyf Hagancy.
