Biography of Alexander Knox

Alexander Knox (January 16, 1907 - April 25, 1995) was a Canadian actor and author of a series of adventure novels about the exploration of the Great Lakes territories in the nineteenth century. He was born in Stratford, Ontario, into a family of Presbyterian priests. His writing and later acting talents emerged at an early age. As an adult, he moved to the United States, to Boston, to pursue a career on stage. In the thirties, he moved to London, where he managed to appear in several films. In 1940, he shone on stage in the Broadway play "Jupiter Laughs" alongside actress Jessica Tandy. In 1944, Darryl F. Zanuck chose him for the lead role in the film "Wilson," a biographical film about the life of Woodrow Wilson. For this role, Knox received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. However, during the McCarthy era (the decade from the late forties characterized by a wave of fear of communism: accusations of disloyalty, subversive activities, and political betrayal without proper evidence), Hollywood studios blacklisted Alexander Knox, and he returned to England. From 1943, he was married to American actress Doris Nolan. In England, Knox had several minor roles. One of them was in the thriller "The Night My Number Came Up" in 1955. In 1967, he appeared in two films - "Accident" and the Bond film "You Only Live Twice." In 1971, Knox released five adventure novellas recounting the exploration of the wild Canadian territories in the 19th century. Strangely, some of them contained sexual passages that sharply contrasted with his calm on-screen persona that brought him fame.

In 1980, Knox returned to Canada to work on the television series "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy." The following year was outstanding in Alexander Knox's life, as he received an honorary law degree from the University of Western Ontario. He had leading roles in "Over 21," "Sister Kenny," "The Vikings," "Europa '51," "None Shall Escape," "The Longest Day," and "Nicholas and Alexandra." He published a total of six adventure novels: "Bride of Quietness," "Night of the White Bear," "The Enemy I Kill," "Raider's Moon," "The Kidnapped Surgeon," and "Totem Dream."

In the last decade of his life, Knox settled in Berwick-upon-Tweed, England. Alexander Knox passed away in April 1995 at the age of 88 from cancer.
