Alexander Kovanko: A Pioneer of Russian Aviation
Early Life and EducationAlexander Alexandrovich Kovanko was born into a military family in 1888. At the age of 10, he enrolled in the prestigious 1st Petersburg Cadet Corps. After graduating, he pursued his military career at the Nikolaev Engineering Academy, where he earned his commission in 1909.
Aviation Career
In 1909, Kovanko's passion for aviation led him to join the 1st East Siberian Field Aeronaut Battalion. He quickly ascended the ranks, becoming a lieutenant in 1911. In 1912, he traveled to France to train at the renowned Newpor Aircraft School.
Military Service
Upon his return to Russia, Kovanko became an instructor in the Gatchina Aeronaut School. In 1913, he designed and built his own aircraft. With the outbreak of World War I, he served as a pilot in the 9th and 11th Corps Aviation Detachments, flying alongside renowned aviator Pyotr Nesterov.
Capture and Imprisonment
During a reconnaissance mission in 1914, Kovanko's aircraft was damaged by enemy fire and he was forced to land in enemy territory. He was captured by the Austrians and held prisoner until 1918.
White Army Service
After his release from captivity, Kovanko joined the Volunteer Army. He served as an aviation detachment commander and later as the head of the Military Aviation School. He also played a key role in the air support of the Kuban landing operation.
Emigration and Death
Following the defeat of the White Army, Kovanko emigrated to Yugoslavia. He continued his aviation career in the Royal Yugoslavian Air Force and worked as an instructor in a flight school. In 1926, he tragically died in an accident while testing an aircraft of his own design.
Legacy
Alexander Kovanko was a true pioneer of Russian aviation. He was a skilled pilot, a talented engineer, and a dedicated advocate for the development of air power. His contributions to the field of aviation continue to inspire generations of aviators today.
