Fighter Pilot Philip Kosolapov: A Legendary Soviet Ace
Early Life and CareerPhilip Makarovich Kosolapov was born on January 9, 1919, in the village of Volkovo, Russia. After completing seven years of schooling, he worked at an oil refinery and joined the aeroclub in Ufa. In December 1938, he enlisted in the Red Army and graduated from the Chkalov Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1940.
World War II
In September 1942, Kosolapov was assigned to the 2nd Guards Fighter Air Regiment on the Western Front. He quickly distinguished himself as a skilled fighter pilot, becoming squadron commander within a year.
Combat Record
By August 1943, Kosolapov had flown 107 combat missions and engaged in 25 air battles, shooting down 8 enemy aircraft personally and 6 in cooperation with his comrades. He further distinguished himself in numerous aerial encounters:
On January 22, 1943, Kosolapov shot down a Messerschmitt Bf 110 in a dogfight.
On January 27, 1943, he and his wingman downed two Junkers Ju 88 bombers.
On June 8, 1943, he led an attack on an enemy airfield, destroying a Focke-Wulf Fw 190.
On July 14, 1943, Kosolapov shot down another Bf 110.
On August 6, 1943, he and his squadron claimed a total of 9 enemy aircraft, including five Ju 87 dive bombers and four Fw 190s.
Hero of the Soviet Union
For his bravery and skill in combat, Kosolapov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on September 2, 1943. He continued to fight with distinction throughout the war, eventually commanding the 937th Fighter Aviation Regiment.
Post-War Career
After the war, Kosolapov remained in the Soviet Air Force, graduating from the Air Force Academy in 1955. He retired from active duty in 1957 with the rank of Colonel and settled in the city of Chernihiv, Ukraine.
Legacy
Philip Kosolapov passed away on August 7, 1994. He was a highly decorated war hero, having received numerous medals and honors, including the Order of Lenin and the title of Honorary Citizen of Zielona Góra, Poland. His legacy as a fearless fighter pilot and skilled commander remains an inspiration to generations of aviators.
