Early Life and Military Career

Born on July 26, 1965, in the village of Noviki, Russia, Alexander Syrsky has been living in Ukraine since 1980. He graduated from the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School and commenced his military service in 1986 as a commander of a mechanized infantry platoon.

Rise Through the Ranks

In 1993, Syrsky led a mechanized infantry battalion in the 6th Division of the National Guard of Ukraine. He subsequently commanded the regiment of this division. In 1996, he graduated with honors from the Academy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (operational-tactical level). In 2005, he earned a gold medal upon graduating from the National Defense Academy of Ukraine (operational-strategic level).

In the early 2000s, Syrsky became commander of the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, based in Bila Tserkva. He was promoted to the rank of Major General. In 2014, he was appointed First Deputy Head of the Main Command Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where he was responsible for cooperation with NATO.

Conflict in Eastern Ukraine

With the outbreak of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, Syrsky was named Chief of Staff of the Anti-Terrorist Operation. By early 2015, he served as Chief of Staff and First Deputy Head of the Anti-Terrorist Operation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. He participated in battles for Debaltseve, Vuhlehirsk, Logvinovo, and Redkodub. During the fighting, he commanded the Sector S headquarters alongside General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Chief Viktor Muzhenko, ensuring the safety of ammunition convoys.

Leadership at the Forefront

In 2016, Syrsky became Chief of the Joint Operational Headquarters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In 2017, he was appointed Head of the Anti-Terrorist Operation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. On May 6, 2019, President Petro Poroshenko named Syrsky commander of the Joint Operational Headquarters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After the presidential election victory of Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2019, he was dismissed from this post and appointed as Commander of the Ground Forces of Ukraine.

Decorations and Honors

Syrsky was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General on December 5, 2016. On August 23, 2020, he received the military rank of Colonel General. With the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he commanded the defense of Kyiv and was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine by President Zelenskyy. In September 2022, he led the successful Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region.

Leadership Style

Analysts at The Economist have described Syrsky's command style as embracing decentralized leadership, detailed planning, and the use of elements of deception and surprise. He adheres to decentralized management principles learned during his time in Brussels in 2013, where he met with NATO representatives and discussed the modernization of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He places great importance on troop morale, reads messages from hundreds of soldiers daily, and regularly visits troops on the front lines.

Personal Life

Syrsky is married to Tamara Kharchenko and has a son named Oleksandr. He owns a land plot near Bila Tserkva (since 2016) and a service apartment in Kyiv (since 2018). In 2017, he purchased a Renault Megane sedan for $23,000.
