Early Life and Artistic Education

Alexander Yakovlevich Utin was born in 1901 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. His father, Yakov Grigoryevich Utin, was a medical assistant, and his mother, Anna Ivanovna Utin (née Kuzmina), was a homemaker.

Utin displayed an early talent for painting and attended the Yekaterinburg Real School. However, he later enrolled in the Yekaterinburg Art and Industrial School, where he spent five years studying under renowned artists such as Leonid Turzhansky, Alexander Paramonov, and Vasily Konovalov.

Artistic Development

After graduating from the Art and Industrial School, Utin continued his education at the Penza Art School, where he studied under the tutelage of Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Utin produced numerous works that reflected the socialist ideology of the time, including paintings, satirical drawings, and posters.

Artistic Recognition and Career

In 1934, Utin joined the Sverdlovsk Union of Soviet Artists and exhibited his works in the Sverdlovsk City Picture Gallery. Art critic B. V. Pavlovsky praised Utin's "temperamentally executed" and "coloristically beautiful" painting, "Dvori" (Yard).

During World War II, Utin worked as a talented theatrical artist at the Sverdlovsk Travelling Drama Theater. He also played in the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Boris Klyuzner.

Later Years and Legacy

After becoming a member of the Art Fund of the USSR in 1945, Utin focused on nature painting. He created works such as "Forest," "In Kharitonovsky Park," and "Gladiators," continuing the traditions of Russian landscape and portraiture.

Utin's family included his father, Yakov; mother, Anna; wife, Alexandra; son, Vladimir, a mining engineer and World War II veteran; and daughter, Nina, a Soviet and Russian operetta artist and People's Artist of the RSFSR.

Utin's works are widely regarded as significant contributions to the development of art in the Ural region.
