Russian General
Early Life and CareerKarl Alexander was born in Mömpelgard (present-day Montbéliard, France) to Friedrich Eugen, Duke of Württemberg, and Friederike Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt. In 1791, he joined the Württemberg army as a colonel. In 1794-1799, he fought for Austria against France, rising to the rank of general-lieutenant in 1798.
Russian Service
In 1800, Karl Alexander entered Russian service as a lieutenant general. He was promoted to general of cavalry in the same year. In 1811, he was appointed military governor of Belarus.
Napoleonic Wars
During the Patriotic War of 1812, Karl Alexander fought in the battles of Vitebsk, Smolensk, Borodino, and Tarutino. He received the Order of Saint George, 3rd Class for his valor. In the foreign campaigns, he distinguished himself at the siege of Danzig and captured General Rapp's corps, earning the Order of Saint George, 2nd Class.
Post-Napoleonic Career
After the Napoleonic Wars, Karl Alexander continued as military governor of Belarus. He also served as head of the Main Directorate of Road Communications, focusing on the development of the Vyshnevobelsk, Mariinsk, and Tikhvin water systems. In 1828, a canal was named in his honor, "Duke Alexander of Württemberg Canal."
Marriage and Death
Karl Alexander married Antonia of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1798. He died on July 4, 1833, in Gotha, Germany.
