Spanish General and Politician
Early Life and Military CareerFrancisco Javier Castaños y Aragorri was born into a military family in Spain. He fought in the national war against Napoleon, demonstrating his military prowess.
Attempt at Constitutional Rule
In 1815, Castaños played a key role in an attempt to establish constitutional rule in Spain. However, the efforts were met with resistance, and Castaños was arrested.
Imprisonment and Release
After two years of imprisonment, Castaños was freed in 1819. He then joined the rebellion of Count Aibosbal, the commandant of Cadiz. Castaños was again arrested but released in 1820 by Rafael del Riego, who had successfully proclaimed the Constitution of 1812.
Political Career
Castaños was elected deputy from Galicia to the Cortes (parliament) in 1821. He later became governor of Galicia. In 1822, a duel forced him to resign, but the following year, during the French invasion, he was appointed general of a division in Corunna.
Exile and Return
After the failure of the liberal movement, Castaños retreated to England and then South America. In 1833, a general amnesty allowed him to return to Spain.
Legacy
Castaños was a hero for liberals in the early 19th century and an inspiration to the Decembrists, a group of Russian revolutionaries. He is mentioned in Alexander Pushkin's poem "To P.S. Pushchin."
