Early Life and Education
Alexander Zhukoff was born and raised in Austria, the son of Russian émigrés who had fled after the October Revolution. He developed a passion for filmmaking at an early age, and pursued his studies at the Vienna Film Academy, where he graduated in 1980. Zhukoff studied screenwriting under Harald Zusanek, and filmmaking with Axel Corti and Alfons Stummer.
Career in Film and Television
After graduating, Zhukoff embarked on a career in film and television. He directed documentaries, music videos, and short films, working for various broadcasters including ORF, 3sat, BR-alpha, and Fashion TV. In 1986, he founded his own film production company.
Live Video Performance and Multimedia Art
In 2003, Zhukoff's artistic trajectory took a significant turn with the creation of his live video performance, "I Do Not Know of a Better World." This piece honored the 30th anniversary of the death of Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann and was presented at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. This project sparked a new direction in his career, leading him to explore multimedia installations in art museums.
Documentary Films with Nadezhda Chistyakova
In 2006, Zhukoff began collaborating with Russian journalist and author Nadezhda Chistyakova. Together, they produced documentaries for ORF that explored the history, culture, and social fabric of Vienna. These films were distributed internationally and showcased on various international channels.
Personal Life
Alexander Zhukoff and Nadezhda Chistyakova were married in 2007 and have a daughter named Ulyana. They reside in the heart of Vienna, where Zhukoff also has his studio.
