From modest beginnings in Moscow, Cristian Jereghi emerged as a renowned Moldovan director and Ukrainian citizen. Born to acclaimed filmmaker Valeriu Jereghi, he inherited a passion for storytelling at the tender age of 19.
Early Years and Education
Cristian pursued his cinematic aspirations at the prestigious VGIK film school in Moscow, where he honed his craft under the guidance of acclaimed director Vadim Abdurakhmanov. Graduating in 2010, he became a member of the Moldovan Union of Cinematographers, marking his entry into the film industry.
Activism and the Maidan Revolution
Jereghi's passion extended beyond filmmaking to the political arena. He actively supported the 2013-2014 Euromaidan protests in Ukraine, becoming a staunch advocate for democratic values. As a member of the "Babylon'13" creative group, he documented the tumultuous events that unfolded in Kiev.
Wartime Experiences
In February 2014, amidst violent clashes in the heart of Kiev, Jereghi suffered an осколочное wound. Undeterred, he joined the Ukrainian volunteer battalion "Kievan Rus" and actively participated in the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Filmmaking in a Conflict Zone
Throughout the conflict, Jereghi combined his military service with his filmmaking skills. As a director for Ukraine's "1+1" television channel, he chronicled the realities of war and its impact on the lives of those caught in the crossfire.
Ukrainian Citizenship
In May 2015, Jereghi received Ukrainian citizenship, solidifying his bond with the nation he had fought and reported on. It was a testament to his unwavering belief in the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people.
