Born in Yevpatoria, Ukraine, to a working-class family, Alexander Sergeevich Davydov embarked on a remarkable scientific journey that would span decades and earn him international recognition.

Early Life and Education

Graduating from secondary school in 1930, Davydov relocated to Moscow and initially worked as a grinder in an automobile plant. However, his passion for physics soon led him to enroll in preparatory courses and, in 1933, he secured admission to the Physics Faculty of Moscow State University (MSU). Under the tutelage of renowned physicist Igor Yevgenyevich Tamm, Davydov became a respected member of Tamm's distinguished school.

World War II and Scientific Breakthroughs

The outbreak of World War II interrupted Davydov's scientific pursuits. Despite completing his thesis on beta-decay theory and internal conversion in 1943, its submission was delayed due to wartime constraints. Meanwhile, Davydov learned that his relativistic equations for particles with spin 3/2 had been independently derived by Julian Schwinger.

Molecular Excitons and Quantum Mechanics

After the war, Davydov joined the Institute of Physics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (UkrAN) in Kyiv, where he made seminal contributions to the theory of molecular excitons. He predicted the splitting of non-degenerate molecular terms in crystals, an effect known as "Davydov splitting." His work stimulated numerous theoretical and experimental studies worldwide, laying the foundation for the spectroscopy of molecular crystals and complex molecules.

Atomic Nuclei and Solid-State Physics

In 1958, Davydov was appointed Chair of Quantum Mechanics at MSU. During this time, he delved into the study of atomic nuclei. He developed the theory of collective excitations, known as the "coaxial-nuclear" model, and made significant advancements in understanding the interplay between nuclear rotation and surface vibrations. Davydov's work contributed to the theory of electromagnetic transitions in atomic nuclei, considering both longitudinal and transverse deformation.

Return to Kyiv and Recognition

Returning to Kyiv in 1964, Davydov assumed leadership roles at the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Theoretical Physics of UkrAN. He continued his research on nuclear and solid-state physics, culminating in the publication of "Excited States of Atomic Nuclei" (1966) and "Theory of Molecular Excitons" (1968). His groundbreaking work earned him the Lenin Prize (1966), the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1969), and the prestigious Hero of Socialist Labor title (1982).
