Early Life and Education

Aleksandr Nikolaevich Efimov was born on May 6, 1923, in the village of Kantemirovka, Voronezh Oblast, Russia. His father, Nikolai Gerasimovich, was a railroad worker, while his mother, Akulina Mitrofanovna, was a homemaker.

Despite his father's wishes for him to follow in his footsteps, Efimov had a passion for aviation. He joined the school aviation club in the mid-1930s and later attended a glider school in Millerovo.

Military Career

In 1940, Efimov enrolled in the Voroshilovgrad Aeroclub. In May 1941, he joined the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School, graduating in July 1942. He was immediately sent to the front, joining the 198th Assault Aviation Regiment.

During the Battle of Kursk, Efimov became an experienced pilot and rose through the ranks. He was appointed Deputy Commander of a squadron and led missions to attack enemy positions.

Battle of August 18, 1943

One of Efimov's most memorable battles occurred on August 18, 1943. While leading a group of Il-2 attack aircraft, he encountered a formation of 17 enemy Messerschmitt and Focke-Wulf fighters.

Despite being outnumbered, Efimov and his wingman, Captain Viktor Malinkin, engaged the enemy in a fierce dogfight. Efimov single-handedly shot down two Me-110 fighters, while the group managed to destroy several more enemy aircraft.

Post-War Career

After the war, Efimov remained in the Air Force, where he held various leadership positions. In 1951, he graduated from the Air Force Academy and in 1957 from the Military Academy of the General Staff.

In 1975, Efimov was promoted to the rank of Air Marshal. In 1984, he became Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force and Deputy Minister of Defense of the USSR. He also received the State Prize of the USSR for testing new weapons.

Later Life and Honors

From 1990 onwards, Efimov served as Chairman of the State Commission for the Use of Air Transport. He was a respected professor and candidate of military sciences.

Efimov received numerous awards, including three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and the State Prize of the USSR. He was also a recipient of several foreign orders and medals.
