Early Life and Activism

Alexander Martin, later known as Alexandre Albert, was born into a wealthy farming family on April 27, 1815, in Bury, France. As a teenager, he witnessed the July Revolution of 1830 firsthand, sparking his interest in politics and social justice. Albert later moved to Paris and established a popular workers' journal, "L'Atelier," in 1840.

Revolutionary Involvement

In 1834, Albert actively participated in the Lyons workers' uprising and became its unofficial spokesperson, coining the slogan "Live by working or die fighting." He played a prominent role in the French Revolution of 1848, fighting on the Parisian barricades and serving as a member of the Provisional Government.

Government Service and Radicalism

Albert's involvement in the Provisional Government led to his appointment as President of the Commission for the Organization of National Workshops. However, he became disillusioned with the bourgeois government and aligned himself with more radical socialists, including Louis Auguste Blanqui and Armand Barbès.

Uprising and Imprisonment

In 1848, Albert joined an anti-government demonstration, leading to his arrest and eventual conviction. He was sentenced to exile, which was later commuted to imprisonment. Albert's health deteriorated during his incarceration, leading to his transfer to a prison in Tours in 1854.

Later Life and Legacy

After being released from prison in 1859, Albert returned to Paris and worked as a machinist. He participated in the Government Commission of Barricades to defend Paris in 1870. Despite his involvement in the Paris Commune in 1871, Albert's influence had waned. He died on May 28, 1895, at the age of 80.

Albert's contributions to the workers' movement and his role in the French Revolution of 1848 make him a significant figure in French political history. He remains an inspiration to those who advocate for workers' rights and social equality.
