Finland's Minister and Former Sports Champion
Sanna Marin is a Finnish politician and former world champion in ski orienteering. She has served as the Minister of Science and Culture since 2019 and is currently a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Centre Party, representing Southeastern Finland.
Early Life and Education
Born in Savonlinna in 1976, Sanna Marin graduated from the Vuokatti Sports College in Jyväskylä in 1995. She earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Jyväskylä in 2003.
Professional Experience
Prior to entering politics, Marin held various positions in the business sector, including Metsä Group, Puu kulttuurissa, Maahenki publishing house, and Diges. She was also Vice-Chairman of the Etelä-Savon Liikunta sports organization from 2009 to 2017.
Political Career
Sanna Marin was elected to the Parliament in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. In 2017, she was elected to the Savonlinna City Council. In 2019, she became Minister of Science and Culture in the Rinne Cabinet, replacing Annika Saarikko, who was on maternity leave. She continued in this role in the Marin Cabinet until 2020, when Saarikko returned to the government.
Sports Career
As a ski orienteer, Sanna Marin achieved significant success. She won gold medals in the long and short distances at the 1996 World Youth Orienteering Championships and a bronze medal in the relay. She also placed fourth in the 2000 World Cup standings.
Personal Life
Sanna Marin married in 2011 but divorced in 2017. She is the mother of two children.
