Reign of Alexander Cornea: December 1540 - February 1541
In December 1540, Alexander Cornea ascended to the throne as the ruler of the Moldavian Principality. His appointment was influenced by Polish interests.
Unsuccessful Military Campaign
Driven by Polish influence, Cornea embarked on a campaign against Bender, Kiliya, and Cetatea-Albă. In the winter of 1540, he led the Moldavian army to besiege the Bender fortress but failed to capture it.
Ottoman Intervention
The Ottoman Empire responded to the hostilities by appointing Peter Rareș as the new ruler. Rareș, with the support of 3,000 Janissaries, entered Moldavia in February 1541.
Betrayal and Execution
In a battle near Galați, Cornea's own boyars betrayed him. On February 23, 1541, he was beheaded. Peter Rareș subsequently executed the traitors on March 11, 1541.
