Artur Abramyan: An Armenian Goalkeeping Legend

A Promising Beginning

Artur Abramyan, a Soviet football legend, rose to prominence as a goalkeeper in 1966 when his club, FC Ararat Yerevan, returned to the top flight. He exhibited exceptional skills and was named the best debut goalkeeper of the USSR by the youth magazine "Smena." That same year, Abramyan was included among the top 10 athletes in Armenia.

A Pillar of Success

Abramyan played an instrumental role in FC Ararat's achievements from 1971 to 1975. His impressive performances contributed significantly to the club's successes during that period. In recognition of his remarkable goalkeeping, Abramyan was inducted into the prestigious Lev Yashin Club in 1980, a club reserved for goalkeepers who had kept clean sheets in 100 or more games. Abramyan achieved the remarkable feat of 138 clean sheets in his career.

Abramyan is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Armenian football history. His exceptional bravery, agility, and spectacular saves on breakaways were trademarks of his exceptional goalkeeping technique. Known for his flamboyant style, Abramyan left an indelible mark on the sport.

Post-Playing Career: Officiating

After retiring from playing, Abramyan continued to contribute to football as a referee from 1981 to 1987. He officiated matches in the Soviet championship, utilizing his knowledge and experience to maintain the integrity and fairness of the game.
