Early Life and Education
Born on February 11, 1911, in the village of Zaboroche, Vladimir Oblast, Aleksey Agafonov was of Russian descent. He completed primary school and worked in a collective farm before entering the Red Army for mandatory military service in 1933. After discharge, he worked in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod).
Military Service
Agafonov was mobilized again in August 1941 and deployed to the front in 1942. As a squad leader in the 16th Guards Independent Engineer Squadron, he distinguished himself during reconnaissance missions at the Dnieper River crossing near Komarin, Belarus.
Dnieper Crossing Mission
On September 24, 1943, under heavy enemy fire, Agafonov swam across the Dnieper, reconnoitering potential crossing sites and river approaches. He spent a night behind enemy lines, gathering vital intelligence for his command.
Heroism and Sacrifice
Agafonov's reconnaissance proved invaluable, facilitating the successful crossing of the Dnieper. However, he met his fate in battle near Gomel on November 22, 1943. His bravery and sacrifice earned him the posthumous title of Hero of the Soviet Union on January 15, 1944.
Legacy
Agafonov was buried in the village of Norvinki in Belarus, but his remains were later reinterred in a mass grave in the village of Karma. His heroic actions and unwavering military service remain a testament to his courage and the sacrifices made during the Great Patriotic War.
