Early Life and Career

Alexei Yegorovich Badayev was born in 1883 into a peasant family. Beginning his career as a locksmith, he moved to St. Petersburg in 1903 and joined the Socialist Revolutionary Party.

Political Activism and the Duma

In 1904, Badayev joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). He became an active member of the Metalworkers' Union and was elected to the Fourth State Duma in 1912 as a member of the Bolshevik faction.

Revolution and Government

During World War I, Badayev was arrested and sentenced to exile. After the February Revolution, he returned to Petrograd and was elected to the city's Duma. He played a prominent role in the October Revolution and later headed Petrograd's food supply agencies.

Later Career and Controversies

In 1922, Badayev became a candidate member of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (b). From 1930, he held several government positions, including Minister of Food Industry for the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR). However, his behavior during a state visit to Mongolia and Tuva brought him into disrepute.

Disgraced and Retirement

In 1943, Badayev was removed from his position as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR due to allegations of alcoholism and misconduct. He was appointed head of the Glavpivo trust and died in Moscow in 1951.

Legacy

Badayev wrote the 1929 memoir "Bolsheviks in the State Duma" and was awarded two Orders of Lenin and other honors. Despite his later downfall, he remains a notable figure in Soviet history.
