Early Life and Education
Boris Mikhailovich Teplov was born on October 13, 1923, in Sarapul, Autonomous Republic of Udmurtia. He developed a passion for psychology at an early age and went on to study it at the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Philosophy, Leningrad University, graduating in 1950.
Academic Career
After graduating, Teplov worked as a teacher of logic and psychology at the 207th School in Leningrad from 1949 to 1956. He pursued his academic career by earning his Candidate of Psychology degree in 1953 and his Doctor of Psychology degree in 1966. In 1967, he became a professor, and in 1969, he assumed the role of Head of the Department of General Psychology at Leningrad University's Faculty of Psychology.
From 1972 to 1976, Teplov served as the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at Leningrad University. In 1979, he moved to Moscow State University (MSU) to become Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Head of the Department of General Psychology. During his tenure at MSU, he founded the Center for Psychological Assistance to the Family.
From 1976 to 1994, Teplov also held the position of Head of the Laboratory of Psychology of Communication at the Psychological Institute of the Russian Academy of Education (RAO). After retiring in 1994, he continued to work as a leading researcher and head of the scientific group "Psychology of Communication, Development, and Rehabilitation of Personality" at the Psychological Institute of RAO.
Scientific Contributions
Teplov made significant contributions to the fields of general, pedagogical, social psychology, and acmeology. His doctoral dissertation, "Perception and Understanding of One Person by Another," pioneered the exploration of human cognition in interpersonal interactions. He investigated the connections between perception, memory, imagination, and thinking processes and the motivational-need sphere and behavior of individuals engaged in communication.
Teplov's research extended to the study of age, gender, and professional differences in interpersonal communication and the formation of first impressions. He was a pioneer in the field of acmeology, a discipline that examines human development during maturity and at the highest levels of achievement.
Awards and Affiliations
Teplov's contributions to the field of psychology were recognized with numerous awards and affiliations. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1983 and was elected as a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR in 1971, becoming a full Member in 1978. He served as Vice-President of the Academy from 1986 to 1989.
Teplov was also a member of several international organizations, including the International Association of Scientific Psychology, the International Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, and the International Academy of Psychological Sciences.

Throughout his career, Teplov published over 400 scientific works, 50 of which were translated into foreign languages. His most notable publications include:
