Early Life and Education
Alexander Schmemann was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, into a family of mining engineers. After the Russian Civil War, his family emigrated to France in 1923. Schmemann received his education in Nice.
Academic and Theological Career
He attended the University of Paris, graduating with a law degree in 1935. Subsequently, he studied at the Paris Theological Institute, specializing in Mariology, canon law, dogmatic theology, Old Testament scripture, and Hebrew.
Ordination and Priesthood
In 1947, Schmemann was ordained as a priest in the Western European Exarchate of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. He defended his doctoral dissertation in 1954 and was elected professor.
Leadership at the Theological Institute
Schmemann served as dean of the Paris Theological Institute from 1962 and rector from 1965 to 1991. He was also the rector of the Saint Sergius Parish associated with the institute. In 1975, he was elevated to the rank of Protopriest.
Involvement in the Russian Student Christian Movement
Outside of his academic and religious duties, Schmemann was actively involved in the Russian Student Christian Movement (RSXDM) in France. He organized and served as the spiritual director of the movement's children's camps.
