A Pioneer in Naval Architecture
In 1887, Krylov joined the shipbuilding department of the Nikolaev Naval Academy, where he spent the rest of his career as a lecturer and researcher. His groundbreaking work on "The Theory of Ship Rolling" (1895) revolutionized the understanding of ship stability and established his reputation as a leading authority in naval architecture.
Contributions to Mathematics and Engineering
Beyond his pioneering work in ship design, Krylov made significant contributions to mathematics and engineering. His investigations into the theory of vibration, gyroscopes, and external ballistics expanded the boundaries of scientific knowledge. He also proposed a new system of dromoscope, an apparatus for automatically calculating compass deviation.
Collaboration with Stepan Makarov
From 1900, Krylov collaborated closely with renowned admiral and naval architect Stepan Makarov on issues of ship buoyancy. Their joint efforts resulted in the development of principles that became widely adopted in the design of modern warships.
Leadership and Recognition
Krylov served as the head of the Experimental Basin (1900-1908) and later as Chief Inspector of Shipbuilding (1908-1910). In 1916, he reached the rank of General of the Fleet and became a member of the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences.
