Alexei Nikolaevich Larionov

Alexei Nikolaevich Larionov was a Soviet state and party official who served as the First Secretary of the Yaroslavl and Ryazan Oblast Committees of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).

Early Life and Education

Larionov was born on August 6 (19), 1907 in Gribanovskaya village, Arkhangelsk Governorate. From a young age, he worked in agriculture and attended a local school. At age 17, he joined the Young Communist League (Komsomol) and held leadership positions in the Onega District Committee of the Komsomol from 1925 to 1929.

Wartime Leadership

After serving in the Red Army, Larionov returned to party work. He graduated from the Institute of Red Professors in 1938 and was sent to the Yaroslavl Oblast. From 1938 to 1946, he held various positions in the Yaroslavl Oblast and City Committees of the CPSU, including First Secretary.

During World War II, Larionov led the political department of the Department of Defensive Works in the Yaroslavl Oblast and served as Chairman of the Yaroslavl City Defense Committee. Under his leadership, the Yaroslavl Oblast played a vital role in supplying the front with ammunition and food, while also maintaining cultural and educational activities in the region.

Rise to Prominence

In 1946, Larionov became Head of the Department of Party Organ Cadres in the Central Committee of the CPSU. In November 1948, he was appointed First Secretary of the Ryazan Oblast Committee of the CPSU. He was a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1952 to 1960 and served as a delegate to several party congresses.

"Ryazan Miracle" and Suicide

In 1959, Larionov falsified agricultural production figures, claiming that the Ryazan Oblast had "overfulfilled" its meat and milk production quotas by three times. This incident, known as the "Ryazan Miracle," was exposed the following year.

Disgraced and facing criminal charges, Larionov committed suicide in 1960. He was buried in the Skorbyshchensky Cemetery in Ryazan.

Legacy

Larionov's actions inspired several literary works, including Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "For the Good of the Cause," Vasily Kochytov's "The Secretary of the Regional Committee," and Nadezhda Shundik's "In the Land of Blue Eyes."
