Political Career
Gašparovič's political career began in 1992 when he was elected to the Slovak Parliament. He served as Chairman of the Parliament from 1998 to 2002. In 2004, he was elected President of Slovakia, making him the third president of the country after its separation from the Czech Republic and the second president to be elected through direct elections.
Presidency
As President, Gašparovič played a largely ceremonial role but also exercised some influence on the government. He had the authority to delay the signing of laws and influence the appointment of ministers. During his presidency, Gašparovič often criticized the right-wing government led by Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda, calling for its resignation.
